Saturday Reading

Hey There!

Hope everyone had an amazing Christmas spent with family and friends. I’m so grateful that my holiday break extends until January 13th and I am officially on holidays from work as of today. I will be spending my two weeks in Palm Springs exploring some new restaurants and reading by the pool. LA will also be getting a visit from me….in particular The Grove and Disneyland with my niece and nephew.

Today I’m just sharing a few things that have sparked some interest this week:

1. This post on the poem Brad Pitt wrote to his wife. It is something that all men should read.

2. This beauty product. I am not a fan of oil on the face, but this stuff makes your skin extremely moisturized and smooth. Try it!

3. For all of you Vancouverites who want to get out of the city. Head down to Seattle for the weekend and read this post before you go with tips on where to eat, stay and play.

4. These books. I recently got my parents the West Coast one and it provides a 36-hour overview of what to do in West Coast cities. Perfect for their drives down to Palm Springs.

5. This Dress for NYE that I’m in love with. Perhaps paired with these shoes.

6. This guide to New York. Absolutely amazing. If you plan on visiting New York, or simply already live there, this is the guide to follow. I promise.

7. This 15-minute-workout for all you ladies who just don’t have time to hit the gym this holiday season. Also loving it Girl Adrianne Ho’s Fitness and Lifestyle Blog: Sweat the Style.

8. For any of those going away on vacation like myself, I suggest reading this article on how to pack, with tips from the top Fashion Stylists. If you’re simply going away for the weekend it wouldn’t hurt to tote one of these around.

As you can tell I’m a little obsessed with travel right now. Hope you guys found some good ideas.

Happy holidays and vacationing!

Playing Tourist: Gastown

Hey Everyone!

A couple weeks ago, while driving to Y Yoga in Yaletown, my friend Jess and I came to the realization that we were lacking knowledge in the Vancouver tourist department. In other words, if someone came up to us on the street and asked us where the cool places to eat or shop were, we wouldn’t have a clue what to tell them. Therefore, we decided we were in dire need of playing tourists in our own city! Since we are only here in the summer and we don’t really do much, we thought it was the perfect time to take advantage of all the cool places around town.

Our first territory we decided to cover was Gastown.

Where to Eat:

A long while back we decided we wanted to try Gorilla Food located at 101-436 Richards St. (Just outside of Gastown). Being that eating clean and healthy is all the rage in Vancouver right now, we are all about trying Gluten-free and Vegan restaurants around town. This restaurant offers just that…and I know what you’re thinking – Vegan? Eww. But don’t fret. I, myself, am not a Vegan, but I thoroughly enjoyed the food. Friendly staff, healthy pastas, pizzas and desserts; what more could a girl want? Try the pesto pizza, lasagna, or simply dip a toe in by ordering a green smoothie and you are sure to become hooked on these healthy alternatives. (Ps. Don’t be thrown off by the tattoo parlour or grungy surrounding neighbourhood…the food is worth it. I promise!)

{The Pesto Pizza}

{A wall of crackers, vegan cookbooks and other dried foods}

{The Lasagna}

{Vegan treats}

Other Good Eat Suggestions:

The Flying Pig:  Located at 102 Water Street this is a local favourite also located in Yaletown. The menu consists of local and seasonally inspired eats and are sure to make you come back for more. Try Andrew’s Pulled-Pork Poutine or the Queen Charlotte Halibut which features mouth-watering Yukon Gold potato Gnocchi on the side. They also serve brunch and do a fun happy-hour, so stop by any time of the day!

Nu If you’re looking for a quick and non-expensive fix, try Nu Greek Food. Located at 332 Water Street, this little place has amazing eats! Try a Chickpea and Mint Salad or go for the Lunch Plate, which features the classic chicken skewer, greek salad and pita for only $9.

Where to Shop:

L’Atelier Home: This little boutique accommodates the cutest decor and treats for your home. Located at 442 W. Cordova, L’Atelier is a must-see place if you are looking to add a girly charm to your home. Come the end of summer, I will definitly be stopping by to pick up a few goodies prior to setting up my apartment in Toronto.

On my Wish List:

(1) A Silver Moroccan Pouf

(2) Volupsa Candles

(3) Moustache Corkscrew

(4) Heart Measuring Spoons

{Volupsa Candles}

{Teacups & Trinkets}

Other Suggestions

One Of a Few:  At 354 Water street, this clothing boutique carries a collection of unique pieces. Pick up a pare of Rachel Comey Booties or something special by Creatures of Comfort. Bring a patient friend along because you may be trying everything on here.

Old Faithful ShopPut this shop on high priority in your list of places to visit. This modern general store at 320 W Cordova is home to one of the cutest French Bull dogs and you will find a great variety of goods for the home, ranging from Stationary to Garden tools.

{Doggy House in the Cash Desk}

{Cute cards}

Even if you think you’re quite familiar with the streets of Gastown, be it you’re one of the many who patrol the cobblestones after a night out at the Lamplighter, this little part of Vancouver will not fail to impress you during the day.

 Stay tuned for a Playing Tourist post on Yaletown and Kitsilano!

Ode to the 50s

Hey everyone!

On Monday I got the opportunity to assist fashion stylist Nicole Sjostedt on the Vancouver Magazine July cover shoot. The theme was 50s and the vision was a woman who had stolen her husbands credit card and gone shopping in his ’58 MG convertible. Also included in the shoot was the cutest 2-year-old Weimaraner!

This was not only my first time behind the scenes of fashion styling, but also my first time ever on a magazine photoshoot! Needless to say, I was the most excited person there. Hands-down.

Anyway, I wanted to show my readers what exactly goes down and how much tedious work goes into a single day of shooting!

Here’s a timeline to give you a summary:

Sunday 11am: Get picked up in Nicole’s beautiful white Land Rover (I drooled a little bit).

Sunday 1130am: Arrive at South Granville Bean Around the World to discuss the day ahead and photoshoot vision. Nicole has previously gone around to each store on our agenda to ask each owner to borrow specific pieces for the shoot. (The issue with fashion shoots in Vancouver: Van does not have any showrooms – no showrooms means no samples… and no samples mean we must pull directly from the retail floor…which means chances to sell the items go down…resulting in unhappy storeowners/managers).

Sunday 12pm: First stop: Oliver and Lilly’s – Probably the cutest little boutique you will ever see on South Granville. Nicole introduces me to owner, we briefly catchup, discuss the theme, and figure out which pieces to pull.

Sunday 1245pm: Next stop across the street: Misch An awesome boutique with all the latest trends. Looking for a statement piece? You will undoubtedly luck out here, as every piece holds its own ground. Met with fellow fashion stylist Mia Fiddis who helped us pull the perfect 50s-esque pieces. Quickly run over to Boboli, where we pick up the motherload of designer goods. Included in this pull are Valentino bow heels and studded clutchHemlut Lang leather jacketand two stunning Giambattista Valli dresses.

Sunday 2pm: Head over to Kitsilano area to the most amazing boutique Rebecca Bree – This was my favourite boutique overall because it was the most girly. Stop by this boutique, if not for the clothing, at least for the to-die-for decor. Shades of pink, teacups, prints and florals litter the store. You will quickly gain an urge to go straight home and re-decorate your bedrooms. Picked up several pairs of printed shorts, Lulu Frost statement jewellery, and a couple other pieces. On way back, quickly stop at Gravity Pope to pick up a pair of beautiful black See by Chloe booties.

Sunday 330pm: Head back over the bridge to downtown Kinghorne area where we make a brief stop to pick up several Party Skirts

Sunday 4pm: Off to Robson area, where we make our next stop at Blu Bird, one of Vancouver’s trendiest stores. We pick up a number of phenomonal pieces, including a Mara Hoffman bandeau-skirt ensemble, Ash wedges, Elizabeth and James sunniesand much much more. Browse around for birthday wish-list ideas.

Sunday 430pm: Last store of the day: J.Crew Robson. My very own store. Pick up a graphic print dress, cork clutch, and red cat-eye sunnies. Say hi to fellow Crew workers and get out the door within 15 minutes. On way back to car, make a pit-stop at CupCakes. Pick up a Buttercup cupcake for Nicole, and Red Velvet for myself.

Sunday 530pm. HOME

Next Day (Day of Photoshoot)….

Monday 830am: Picked up by Nicole, quick stop at Bean Around the World on Marine.

Monday 915am: First big stop of the day is downtown at Holt Renfrew. Pick up the most essential piece of the shoot: a black and white printed Etro dress.

Monday 930am: Arrive at Studio near West Broadway and Manitoba.

Monday 945am: Red MG convertible is lifted into the studio

Monday 10am: Photographers arrive. Begin Unpacking clothes out of Nicole’s car.

Monday 12pm: Model and Make up Artist arrive. Test shots are taken with the model and car. Make a quick pit stop at Milano coffee bar to pick up three Stovepipe coffees.

Monday 1230pm: Makeup Begins and Lunch arrives from Terra BreadsRoasted chicken sandwiches and blueberry bear claws.

Monday 2pm: First shot of the day for the cover. Model wearing J.Crew Black and White print dress with red cat-eye sunnies, Ash wedges, Valentino jewelled cuff and headscarf tied over hair. Cover shot consists of model inside the car with shopping bags popping out everywhere.

Monday 330pm: 2nd shot of the day – Model wearing Etro black and white printed dress, See by Chloe Booties, jewellery from Rebecca Bree, carrying shopping bags walking by car.

Monday 445pm:  Weimaraner arrives on set! Cutest, most excited dog I’ve ever seen. Last shot of the day – Model wearing anchor printed creme jumpsuit with red patent leather Michael Kors heels, Red cat-eyes, and Oliver and Lilly’s local jewellery. Scene consists of model posing with Weimaraner. Catch a shot of model leaning down to kiss the dog! Best shot of the day.

Monday 515pm: Quickly jump into Nicole’s Land Rover to return Boboli goods (Yes, she trusted me with her car). The most expensive of the pieces pulled must be returned ASAP to assure best security (In other words, if anything were to happen to any of the pieces borrowed, it would be coming out of Nicole’s own pocket).

Monday 6pm: Discuss editing and shots to keep. Shoot finally comes to a wrap! Pack up clothes and load Nicole’s car up again.

Monday 630pm: Drop the second most expensive pieces back off at Holt Renfrew.

Monday 645pm: DONE (with the exception of all the other clothes that must be returned the next morning)

And that’s all the glamorous business that happens behind the scenes of magazine editorials you lucky people get to read!

(Also note, many of the places bolded and underlined are linked to each stores/cafes website).

That’s all for today!
